Zurn Yacht Design is announcing a remodeled 1,200-square-foot Massachusetts facility and two additions that double the firm’s design team.
Andrew Major comes from Setzer Yacht Architects with the position of senior designer. Major has a senior specialization in hull design (ranging in size from 11.5-foot kayaks to 151-foot semidisplacement yachts) and building process coordination experience.
Kaolin Kinsey joins Zurn with the position of design engineer. With seven years’ engineering experience in the international marine industry, primarily in pleasure craft, Kinsey comes from J&A Enterprises in Salem, Mass., with key experience in noise and vibration control and mechanical design engineering for boats and yachts. Zurn said Kinsey is also focused on hands-on experience with material testing, construction techniques and conducting various field measurements.
Zurn said the new studio in Marblehead, Mass., will feature state-of-the-art standing workstations in three separate spaces, as well as a conference room, galley and document storage. The space nearly triples the size of the existing studio while maintaining its original location overlooking Marblehead Harbor.
With more than 350 powerboats and sailboats built in the past 20 years, Zurn said it has collaborated with brands such as Marlow Yachts, MJM, Bruckmann, Shelter Island Runabout, Vanquish, C.W. Hood, Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding, Derecktor and Salish Sea Yachts.
“As a yacht designer I don’t know if it is a coincidence that I landed in Marblehead or just sheer luck. I arrived in 1986 and later established Zurn Yacht Design in 1993,” founder Doug Zurn said in a statement.
